I really enjoy every live or video of the two of you conversing together and when you do this individually. It may not be apparent but you each teach us something each time you do this. So thank you both!
Any idea how to turn off notifications for live videos? The setting is clicked to “off” in my settings, but I still get notfications anytime someone goes live in the app. Others in my comments have had the same issue.
One thing you guys did really right from the beginning, and I feel you don't big it up enough, is that you brought a whole lot of big established names onto Substack early on, from a variety of industries. This creates an incentive structure that helps to distinguish Substack from an old blogging site. This is huge, because it means I, as a small fish, am in direct competition with Patti Smith and Bari Weiss et al.. So it means my writing has to be clean, crafted and designed to cut through. I can't just write about my morning sandwhich and click publish. I have to become my own one-man newsroom if I want to have a hope of competing. So professional standards are built in. I would also add that the NYT/Atlantic basic template of a new page helps to create this incentive and value structure. Tone and visual rhetoric matter, as any good newspaper owner knows.
Responsive journalism matters …including opinions. Appreciate you both discussing this, grateful for our Substack journalists who work hard to give true facts.
The problems of CNN and MSNBC obviously partially stem from the changed media landscape, but more importantly stem from horrible leadership at both organizations who were either terribly incompetent and oblivious to the changes occurring and/or in the bubble or the elitists who decided that the public must share their views and would therefore not mind their networks becoming propaganda arms of the Democratic Party rather objective reporters of the facts. News can not always be deconstructed into whatever you want it to be. It takes years to build a reputation and trust and minutes to lose it. Compare the reputation of CBS News and Dan Rather before and after the false reporting concerns GWB ‘s National Guard service in an attempt to influence the 2000 election.
if anything much we're working seems to me this cult of personality idiotic celeb culture reality TV madness would be for the tiny few or none and instead our systems corporations and government would be run led owned if not locally by people who we don't even need to know about cuz theyd be trusted to be decent working people with the interests of others in mind ...but we don't live in that world ..very much don't.,.we got the shite show worst reality tv gubbament with the most selfish worst of humanity getting away with lying stealing and hoarding
thanks at this point we can list on a couple few finger hands how many people in power of wealth with authority or who have platforms and know what has been happening are actually doing much to fight back.....can't say it will be too late tho it is already but nonetheless any time they wanna go past shouting and take action we the people are ready
Wait ….What makes one person more intelligent than the other because they read and write on Substack, Twitter, Meta, Word Press, as well as editorials or opinions in print media? A journalist doesn’t necessarily have the natural intelligence as a Joe Smoe who changes your tires. At times, I hear or see a leaning on both your parts… so isn’t that influence? I consider both of you in the elite class only you have the ability to still be down to earth. The pushing you do for lives is nice, but there are so many thousands of substackers who don’t fit into the realm of lives and wished they did since their writing May be noticed more. That is sad to me.
This conversation seemed to me to be something of a hidden commercial, with Hammish being nothing more than a copywriter for Chris' business. So sad. Journalism is not a content farm!
I disagree. Bezos’s directive (to no longer publish pure opinions anymore) is NOT at all the same as it was before. Many opinion writers were indeed stating their own views — from what they have said themselves it was not previously filtered through Corporate ownership as is said in your discussion. Now, however, it is.
It’s positively stifling free speech in a way that was not previously done.

I agree, RJ is key, especially as the media shifts toward independent creators
It seems that the move by the WSJ is to eliminate Opinion Pages. I don't think newspapers can justify opinion pages today.
Aaron Parnus now has more views than MSNBC...we are seeing a shift from mass media...

Strong points! There's definitely room to improve how media and governance intersect for the greater good

Love this to see you both...you are kind of my heroes...

Hamish will you be setting up an office in Europe ? I feel some kind of presence here would be very beneficial especially now.
For all the people using video & podcast on this platform: wondering if you feel the same about the video analytics here that I do
If so, please restack and share this?
